Clive Burr, the Iron Maiden drummer who was with the band from 1979 to 1982 and performed on their first three studio albums, has died. He was only 56 years old and he had been suffering from multiple sclerosis.

He died in his sleep, at home, surrounded by family.

The sad news is confirmed on the official Iron Maiden website, with Burr’s former mates saying a few words of the man they knew and loved, and who had been by their side as they were taking their first steps towards immortality.

“Clive was a very old friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to Maiden in the early days when we were starting out,” Steve Harris, the founder of the iconic group, says.

“I first met Clive when he was leaving Samson and joining Iron Maiden. He was a great guy and a man who really lived his life to the full. Even during the darkest days of his M.S., Clive never lost his sense of humor or irreverence. This is a terribly sad day and all our thoughts are with Mimi and the family,” Bruce Dickinson adds.

Fans from all over the world are in mourning.
