Whenever a volcano erupts on Earth, a sense of amazement and fear takes over, especially if there are any cities around. But the volcanic activity on Earth is nothing compared to that on Io, Jupiter’s moon.

NASA has revealed an image taken by the Galileo Project that presents Io’s lava flows covering most of the moon’s surface.

Io’s grounds are constantly under construction, as the image shows. The picture was generated using 1996 data from NASA’s Galileo spacecraft and enhanced to emphasize the surface’s brightness and color variations.

What stands out is the lack of craters one would expect from a moon. This can be explained by the rapidly depositing volcanic matter.

The violence of this world can be explained by the changing gravitational tides caused by Jupiter and the other moons present nearby.
