Using a phone's camera

Mobile phone users that enjoy Google's services on their handsets already have now yet another appealing feature available for them, Google Goggles. What this is all about can be resumed in a simple phrase: visual search. In other words, one can benefit from the photo snapper available on the device to take a picture of an object and then perform a search on Google. Take a look at the video below to see what this is all about.

According to Google, the process works this way: - We first send the user's image to Google's datacenters - We then create signatures of objects in the image using computer vision algorithms - We then compare signatures against all other known items in our image recognition databases; and - We then figure out how many matches exist; and - We then return one or more search results, based on available meta data and ranking signals; and - We do all of this in just a few seconds

In a short recap, the Google search experience has evolved from text search on the mobile phone to voice search and now to visual search. Not to mention that the search service has been integrated with a wide range of other services and features, including maps and search by location, so that users can easily find a place they are looking for in their proximity.

“All of today's mobile announcements -- from Japanese Voice Search to a new version of Maps to Google Goggles -- are just early examples of what's possible when you pair sensor-rich devices with resources in the cloud. After all: we've only recently entered this new era, and we'll have more questions than answers for the foreseeable future. But something has changed. Computing has changed. And the possibilities inspire us,” Vic Gundotra, vice president of Engineering stated on the Google Mobile Blog.

With all these advancements already available, and with the suggestion that others more are set to arrive in the future, we're already curious on what Google might have in store for us. Most of you might already know, that now you can perform specific searches on Google, including music or movies, and that you can receive on the phone results that include theaters, locations and programs, as well as other more. With Goggles now available for download from the Android Market, searching on Google has become much easier and appealing, that's for sure.
