Intermec has announced the CN3, which they claim to be the smallest rugged mobile computer in the world. Designed with productivity in mind, the device has a wide array of features well-suited for enterprise use.

Measuring 157 x 84 x 30 mm, the PDA is dust-proof and has a hard case to allow usage in harsh environments. The device comes with a QWERTY keyboard which simplifies data input, or an optional numeric keypad. A useful feature is the integrated GPS unit, that provides on-screen and hands-free turn-by-turn navigation.

The CN3 supports Bluetooth, 3G WAN and WiFi connectivity, allowing for high-speed data transfers. The device can also act as a phone, being compatible with GSM/EDGE and CDMA/EV-DO networks.

The CN3 includes support for Intermec SmartSystems, that allows installation, routine maintenance, application software updates, security adjustments and device settings to be performed automatically and managed remotely, as well as for Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) for interoperability in Cisco infrastructures.

Powered by Windows Mobile 5.0, the device comes with the Messaging and Security Feature Pack, including Direct Push Technology for wireless email. Other features include 128 MB RAM and a 1.3 megapixel camera that can be used as a barcode reader or to capture still images, such as signatures or video images.

The CN3 is expected to be available in the fourth quarter of 2006.
