After two years of waiting, Intel has finally a customer for its cell phone chip.

Launched in February 2003, the Manitoba chip was considered a failure, Intel not succeeding to compete with the fierce competition coming from established competitors like Texas Instruments Inc.

And just when everybody thought that Intel has reached a dead end with its Manitoba, the mmO2 Plc. British operator decides to use the chip, but only after Intel's engineers made a few changes aimed at lowering its price.

The British company will start commercializing a music phone based on Manitoba in UK and Germany.

Gigabyte has also announced a few weeks ago its intent to get involved in cellular telephony by launching a GSM phone. We are witnessing a very interesting migration of hardware producers towards cellular telephony. It's obvious that in the near future, more and more producers will go towards cell phones following the trend imposed by Intel, Ati and Gigabyte.
