Laptop-tablet hybrids will sell under that moniker after all

Intel was never really going to adopt ARM technology, but Advanced Micro Devices has been courting the idea, despite being primarily an x86 processor maker itself.

It turns out that no great inroads will be made on that front even in 2014 though.

Intel was obvious enough, but sources now say that both it and AMD will keep focusing on x86 processors next year.

Much of the new R&D effort will go into chips suited for portable, hybrid devices, known as 2-in-1 laptops/tablets. Or just 2-in-1s.

More than tablets with keyboard docks, these items will be able to behave as tablets but will gain extra capabilities, connectivity and sheer performance once the keyboard half is connected.

The ARMv8 architecture would have worked well for such things, being 64-bit compatible, but the loss of the primary promoter of systems on ARM must have rippled farther than anyone thought.
