The company is supposedly no longer confident that it can enter the competition

It's no secret that Intel has been trying to squeeze into the mobile device market, and the smartphone segment in particular, for years, but while it officially seems to show only continued determination, it might not be so sure of itself behind closed doors.

This is just a vague, unconfirmed rumor, but it's always the really questionable reports that kick up the most fuss.

And this time, the rumor is that Intel is questioning whether it should quit smartphones by 2015 if it continues to fail to gain a foothold.

The rumor is said to have originated in the upstream supply chain of Taiwan.

Apparently, all the resources put into the handset business aren't returning anything. It doesn't help that the company's phone collaboration with Lenovo is over.

Then again, Intel will launch a Merrifield-based 22nm smartphone processor in February, so this may all be just hot air.
