Intel D 920, Intel 672 ?

The company appears to be preparing for parting with the "Pentium" brand which has stayed with Intel's processors for the past 13 years, since the initial launch of the P5 generation of chips. Once the new single-core 600 series as well as the D 800 and D 900 families will be launched, Intel could be releasing them under a new name.

This whole change of identity will be made without too much of a commotion; the entire operation should only have Intel transition to processor names such as "Intel D 920" or "Intel 672" without introducing a new brand. It seems that this change is set to take place in the near future even if Intel didn't even confirm there is going to be a name change, least of all did they mention a date when this might happen.

Obviously, Intel is going through a series of changes after dropping the "Intel inside" logo and motto and choosing the new "Leap ahead" formula. The complete change of identity could be somewhat dangerous for the company, but some analysts from InStat/MDR believe that after having unleashed over a dozen variations of Pentiums under one roof since the brand's introduction in 1993, a shift in the company's marketing and product strategy might do a world of good for Intel as well as for the consumers who were getting confused.
