It combines Atom-based hardware with specially tailored software tools

Media Servers and centers are widespread, but not overly so, and those that do get routinely bought aren't always based on Intel technology. One might even say few are.

Naturally, Intel is none too satisfied with this state of affairs, so it wants to do something about it.

That “something” has turned out to be a Media Server Reference Design based on an Atom CE5300 processing platform.

It will supposedly make media hubs and set-top boxes easier to make, and by extension, cheaper and more convenient to deploy.

It has media and TV engines, plus the Hillcrest Labs' Freespace engine (simpler motion remote control).

Kits should be available to developers in April, which means that it will take months to see if makers of home theater entertainment systems like what Intel is offering.
