Enthusiast-grade SSD 520 arrives in slightly over a month

Back when Intel revealed the Cherryville and Hawley Creek SSDs, the exact launch date wasn't given, but the former, at least, now has a specific date strapped to its name, according to a leak.

By now, people will have come to know of the fact that Intel wants to become a power in other markets besides that of desktop and laptop CPUs (central processing units).

So far, however, its mobile efforts haven't seen any success, and it will be a while before Medfield, and its successors, show if they are up to par.

It so happens that the Santa Clara, California-based company has also acquired the technological property needed for a different semiconductor segment, that of SSDs (solid state drives).

A while ago, we even covered a couple of SSD series that Intel wants to launch in the fourth quarter of this year (2011).

Now, by way of a leak, one of them has been given an exact launch date, that being November 4.

The SSD series in question is the Cherryville, SSD 520 as it will be better known, since Cherryville is just the code name.

It aims to cover a wider range of capacities than most drives out there, with 60 GB as the lowest and 480 GB as the highest option.

It will replace the SSD 510 line (Elmcrest), which is in just 120 GB and 250 GB capacities.

The Cherryville should have lower latencies as well, plus a higher throughput, with reading and writing achievable at up to 520 MB/s and 500 MB/s, respectively (the 510 have 500/315 MB/s). Furthermore, the 4k random write speed is 40,000 IOPS.

Unfortunately, even if there is just a little over a month to go before the formal release, no pricing information was discovered.

This is especially strange, seeing as how the successor to the Cherryville was discovered as well (King Crest, slated for Q2, 2012 release).
