Shuttle launches DS57U Intel-based system

Nettops lack most of the core elements of a computer system, like memory and storage, but they always have the motherboard and CPU already installed. They are also fairly weak, usually.

Shuttle decided to try something a bit stronger and more forward-looking than normal when it put together the DS57U barebone PC model.

That is to say, it has just become the first nettop maker to feature Broadwell central processing units in its products.

The new computer has a very strange front side, combining the normal elements with some that would normally be at the back of the computer.

In truth, the central processor isn't overly powerful, as that would have made it impossible to operate without an active cooler.

As it is, the Intel Celeron 3205U dual-core chip makes do with 1.5 GHz per core and is cool enough that no fan is needed. The TDP (thermal design power) is a mere 15W, less than that really.

And since no fan is there to suck air in, no dust is likely to colonize the interior of the computer either, since the air will lie still at all times. Mostly anyway.

Memory-wise, it is possible to install up to 16 GB of DDR3L memory, thanks to the pair of SO-DIMM sockets, but if you're going for a lower price, you may as well make do with 4 GB or 8 GB. It's not as though the CPU could be able to fully utilize 16 GB anyway.

That said, the new computer also has room for one 2.5-inch solid state drive or hard disk drive, as well as one mini PCI Express card (already equipped with a WLAN module).

Other relevant specifications include a multi-pin connector for remote power-on, two Intel Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, a pair of USB 3.0 ports, one DisplayPort and one HDMI connector. Audio jacks are also available.

Finally, what really stands out (due to the sheer level of weird rather than anything else) is the positioning of two COM ports on the front of the case, not the back.

Availability and pricing

The Shuttle DS57U barebone PC should go up for sale at €192 soon, if it hasn't already, in Europe. No clue on when US stores will get it.
