Instagram, the iPhone app of 2011 topping the charts of iTunes Rewind, has received an update that delivers a tweaked interface, a new filter, a new feature called Lux that allows you to instantly enhance an image, and a new dialog that asks users for permission to upload their contacts to Instagram’s servers.

Instagram is a free app for iPhone and iPad that lets you employ some awesome filtered effects or tilt-shift blur to enhance the photos you take with your iDevice, on the spot.

“Transform everyday moments into works of art you'll want to share with friends and family,” says Burbn, the app’s developer.

Users can share photos in a simple photo stream and they can follow each other’s photos, much like Twitter.

“Every day you open up Instagram, you'll see new photos from your closest friends, and creative people from around the world,” reads the iTunes Preview description.

Version 2.1 adds some new features and enhancements. Lux is probably the feature most users will get excited about. It lets you transform the look and feel of your photos instantly.

“In just one tap, Lux works its magic by making your photos more vibrant and bringing out details you couldn’t see before. Use it with a filter or without,” Burbn (the developer) explains in a blog post.

The app’s interface has been simplified  and improved, according to the developers.

“We’ve simplified the look of Instagram. The improved header and menu buttons in this release are the first steps towards making it easier to understand and interact with our app,” explains Burbn.

Users now get tappable notifications: “…when you tap on an Instagram notification in the iOS Notification Center, you’re brought directly to the relevant photo, comment or user profile page in the app.”

Finally, Instagram now asks users for permission to upload contacts to its servers. The app is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and requires iOS 3.1.2 or later.
