It might score big with mission-critical servers and enterprise workstations

Power failure can really wreak havoc among electronics, which is why there are certain measures in place to preserve hardware health in such situations. Inndisk has just revealed its contribution for SSDs.

Long story short, Innodisk has introduced a technology that will protect SSDs in case power is unexpectedly cut.

That way, data won't be lost and ECC (Error Correcting Code) failure won't occur either.

The gist of it is that the Power Secure technology, as Innodisk chose to name it, has a low power detector.

Once that detector is triggered, the SSD controller will know to complete the current operation using residual power from the SSD's capacitors.

That done, external power will continue to be monitored. As long as voltage levels remain abnormal, access to the flash memory will be denied.

As far as combined hardware and firmware power-down recovery systems go, Power Secure seems to be well enough thought out.

In fact, once power returns, the Power Secure firmware will scan the drive for errors and restore it to a readable state. All this without user intervention of any sort. Now we just have to wait for drives that support the technology.
