IM+, the popular instant messaging client for iPhones and iPads, has added a cool new feature called “Neighbors” where users are offered a new dimension of communication by finding new, real life connections and friends with common interests.

When signed in the new version of IM+, users will be able to locate friends on the map, chat with local friends as well as initiate conversations with people who are located close to them.

Privacy settings allow users to set positioning accuracy to house, street or city, and they can also post local announcements, using IM+ as an advertising channel.

“Using status updates, users can offer local goods or services for sale or see sellers offers in their area,” Shape Services (the developer) explains.

IM+ supports MSN, Yahoo!, Google Talk, AIM, MySpace, Jabber, ICQ, Facebook, Skype and Twitter.

In addition to the new Neighbors location based service, IM+ 5.0 also brings new services icons, DND/Busy status support, the ability to delete account history, as well as multiple bug fixes.

IM+ works on iPhones, iPads, and iPod touch devices alike. The iPad version offers an enhanced, two-pane interface which leverages the screen real estate.

Various options can be found in the top right on the menu bar. These are easily accessible even during conversations, via drop-down dialogs.

The app itself is free, though ad-supported, and requires iOS 3.0 to work. A Pro version that sells for 10 bucks is also downloadable from the App Store. It has more features and it doesn’t bother users with ads.

However, thanks to the recent update, those who use the free version and enlist to join Neighbors will see their ads removed as well. Shape Services only requires that users stay ‘active.’
