We all know it and, to some extent, we’ve all said at least once these past few years: Hollywood is showing increasing signs of turning its back to original stories. Short of the Week has an infographic that confirms that – and shows to what extent it is applicable.

With a note that not all original films are good and all sequels bad, the movie-oriented e-zine establishes that 7 original films made it into top 10 at the US box office in 1981.
That number dwindled to just 1 in 1991, 2 in 2001 and 0 in 2011. Instead, in 2011, there were 8 sequels and 2 adaptations making the big bucks at the box office.
Short of the Week explains that this lack of creativity doesn’t explain the decrease in sales but it’s actually caused by it. In other words, Hollywood is offering audiences exactly the films they’re asking for and, at the same time, playing it safe.
Here is the entire piece on the topic. Trust us, it’s worth a read.
