The team working on Call of Duty: Ghosts at Infinity Ward is keen to make the new first-person shooter a unique experience, with more of a focus on the characters and with a new level structure that gives players more freedom.

Zach Volker, the lead animator on the team, tells The Guardian that, “What we're trying to do this time is focus more on being a character with other characters, telling the story of how they experience the events. It's still a Call of Duty title so don't expect long cutscenes or anything like that.”

The team wants to keep the player involved while delivering story via his actions and those of the squad around him.

Infinity Ward has not yet offered clear information about the narrative of Call of Duty: Ghosts, but the reveal trailer does imply that gamers will be part of an elite special force team facing a more powerful enemy.

Volker adds, “We're not trying to make it an open-world game, and some levels will be more scripted and corridor-like. But there are levels that have been purposefully designed to be very open.”

The teams working on Call of Duty have previously promised more storytelling structure and more open levels, but the series has traditionally focused more on delivering spectacle, with the real innovations linked to the multiplayer modes.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will use an improved engine designed to take advantage of next-gen features.

The game will face competition from Battlefield 4 from DICE.

The new Call of Duty is set to launch on the PC and on the current generation of devices on November 5 of this year.

Versions for the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One from Microsoft will arrive when the devices are on sale.
