The features will be tied to the multiplayer modes

The development team at Infinity Ward says that it has an entire studio working on second screen experiences for its coming Call of Duty: Ghosts first-person shooter, designed to take advantage of the options introduced by the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.

Mark Rubin, an executive producer working on the game, tells Financial Post that, "It’s a little more of a challenge when it comes to our types of games. Looking away from the screen when the action is intense is obviously a challenge from a game design standpoint. So we have to be careful about that."

It seems that the Infinity Ward team is planning on starting out small with its second screen features to see exactly which ones are interesting to players and which ones distract from the core mechanics.

As the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 progress, the team will also refine the way it uses a second screen, like a SmartGlass device or a PlayStation Vita, in Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Rubin adds, "We actually have a whole department – a whole studio, basically – wrapped around the idea of second-screen. Our Beachhead group is doing a lot of work there. But a lot of it ties into multiplayer and I can’t talk too much about it now."

Infinity Ward has offered precious little detailed information on the innovations that will be included in the multiplayer modes for Call of Duty: Ghosts and the core story of the single player is also unclear.

The rival Battlefield 4 will also use second screens and DICE has already said that they will be especially valuable for those who try the new Commander Mode.

Call of Duty: Ghosts arrives on the PC, the PS3 and the Xbox 360 on November 5 worldwide.

Versions for the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One will arrive later in 2013.
