Players can destroy quite a few things but buildings will stay standing

Infamous: Second Son, the next-gen iteration in the superhero franchise from Sucker Punch Productions, will allow players to destroy the environment to some degree, although they won't be able to tear down the whole city if they want it, because lots of problems would appear.

Infamous: Second Son introduces a new protagonist, Delsin Rowe, who acquires a set of powers relating to smoke and fire, and uses them to liberate Seattle from the highly restrictive reign of the DUP (Department of Unified Protection), which has the whole city on lockdown.

Delsin's powers are quite different than the ones used by the hero of the first two games, Cole MacGrath, and Sucker Punch has already showed them off using videos, screenshots, and more.

Now, in an interview with VG247, the studio's Nate Fox confirmed that environmental destruction was possible but that it would be limited to a certain degree.

"We’re absolutely looking to let people create total havoc and we want to let people walk on the wild side, but also we don’t want to let people level the city to a flat parking lot because that’s not fun," Fox said.

Sucker Punch used a certain mentality when designing the destruction system and wanted to give players as much freedom as possible when causing havoc.

"For instance, we don’t want to level a certain building, even if it might be a very rickety looking building, if levelling it means there’s nothing to climb on or no cover to hide behind," Fox explained.

"In general though, our contract with the player is if they think they should be able to do something we try to let them do it, so anything you think you can climb on we let you climb on, so that we maintain trust, and if something seems to you that you should be able to destroy it we try to let you destroy it."

Infamous: Second Son will be released in early 2014 only on the PlayStation 4.
