Our Incoming 2015 series focuses on the most important game launches of the next 12 months, and next up we talk about Torment: Tides of Numenere, one of the most exciting upcoming RPGs.

What we know

Torment: Tides of Numenera has its roots in a Kickstarter campaign that kicked off back in April 2014. After achieving four times the initial goal, Torments: Tides of Numenera became one of the biggest Kickstarter projects related to gaming industry at that time.

Currently, the game has more than 88k contributors and almost $4.8M (€4M) in pledges. Those who want to donate can still do it via the game’s official website.

Developed by inXile, the same studio that gave us another Kickstarter project later turned into game, Wasteland 2, Torment: Tides of Numenera is the spiritual successor of the highly-acclaimed Planescape: Torment.

The game is based on Monte Cook’s new tabletop RPG setting called Numenera, hence the name. Torment: Tides of Numenera promises a rich role-playing experience with focus on storytelling and personal themes.

It’s also worth mentioning that the game will benefit from the experience and expertise of many fantasy writers and RPG game developers, including Pat Rothfuss and Chris Avellone.

Those who have never heard of Planescape Torment and Tides of Numenera may want to know that these are single-player RPG experiences, in which they will meet powerful NPCs and choose to include them in their party.

The game will offer deep narrative, reactivity and real consequences that will make players feel their choices make a difference. There are numerous pathways that can be followed, with players being allowed different approaches.

Graphics-wise, Torment: Tides of Numenera has been confirmed to be built in Unity engine for PC (Windows), Mac and Linux.

Why it matters

As a spiritual successor of Planescape: Torment, one of the best CRPGs of all time, Torment: Tides of Numenera promises a similar or perhaps even deeper gameplay experience.

The new Torment game will be a major milestone in the CRPG world for its deep storyline, multiple choices with real consequences and replayability.

Although it was originally slated for a December 2014 release, due to the multiple stretch goals that have been added to the game, Torments: Tides of Numenera has been delayed to late 2015.
