Our Incoming 2015 series focuses on the most important game launches of the next 12 months, and next up we talk about one of the hottest fighting games coming out in 2015, NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat X.

What we know

The game will include an original and non-linear story, told in a manner similar to the one Injustice: Gods Among Us uses, jumping through timelines and following some of the series' most popular characters.

The events begin at the conclusion of the previous entry in the franchise, spanning to 25 years into the future, enabling the game makers to toy around with the lore.

In addition to this, Mortal Kombat X is set to introduce new challengers fighting for the side of good or the side of evil, and so far we have seen Kotal Kahn, D'Vorah, Ferra / Torr and Cassie Cage in action.

Returning characters include Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Raiden, Kano, Quan Chi, Kung Lao and Goro, as a pre-order bonus, but the developer is still to reveal a lot of the cast.

The games have always had a main antagonist to defeat at the end, and so far NetherRealm Studios has kept things on the down low, not wanting to reveal what the plot is or who the mystery bad guy will be, aside from teasing that it will be a surprising returning character.

Why it matters

The game got a brilliant reboot back in 2011, with Mortal Kombat, the ninth main installment in the long-standing series, and this year's release is set to revolutionize the way the game is played.

The great combat system introduced in Mortal Kombat and Injustice: Gods Among Us, the DC Comics-licensed fighting game, will be expanded upon in Mortal Kombat X.

The game will deliver a ton of new characters, slight moveset variations for every one of the fighters, enabling gamers to play their favorite guy or gal the way they like it best, and comes with all the flashy moves (such as X-Ray combos) seen in the previous embodiment.

The initial Mortal Kombat sparked a lot of controversy and was one of the games leading to the creation of the ESRB and numerous other rating boards for video games, due to its highly violent nature.

Ed Boon, the series' creator, promised to deliver even more incredibly brutal moves and fatalities in Mortal Kombat X, touted to be the most savage finishing moves in the franchise's history.

Mortal Kombat X is coming out on April 14, 2015, headed to the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC platforms. The game is said to run at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second on PC, Xbox One and PS4.
