Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is one of the most anticipated action stealth games in 2015 and the good news is that fans of the franchise won’t have to wait too long, as the title will be released next month.

What we know

There is a lot of information that we already know about Kojima’s upcoming Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, as the developer has been very kind in sharing details on the game.

Fans of the series probably already know the entire background story from the prologue to The Phantom Pain, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, but here is a short recap for those who prefer to play the games one after another.

The Phantom Pain action is set 9 years after the events in Ground Zeroes, so if you’re playing for the story as well, you should start with Ground Zeroes. Both games play the same, as in players have to reach from point A to point B without being detected.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain features open-world environments, which means Snake, the protagonist, will be able to make use of various objects, vehicles, weapons or anything else that he can interact with to reach his objective.

That also means that players will be able to approach each mission in multiple ways, depending on their play style. There are some changes over the previous titles in the series, such as the removal of the radar and other indicators that could warn players when they’re close to the enemy.

Instead, Snake is now the proud owner of some special binoculars that can be used by players to mark the enemies on the map. The map has been changed as well, and now looks like a computer hologram.

Graphics-wise, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is powered by Kojima’s latest iteration of Fox Engine, which looks simply breathtaking on PC. It’s the same engine that powers Ground Zeroes, so anyone can make an idea of what the game will look like.

Why it matters

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain could be one of the most important titles in the franchise because it brings so many changes. Obviously, this doesn’t mean that it will also be the best game in the series, but given the level of dedication Kojima Productions has put into it, we expect it to be at least great.

The open-world environments and quite a few new gameplay mechanics will be very important for the future of the franchise. Ground Zeroes has already received lots of praises from players and the media.

In fact, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is really a stellar game, which has only been downrated due to the fact that it’s too short.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain release date has yet to be announced, but we can expect it to arrive this year.
