What we know

DC Universe Online is Sony Computer Entertainment's big attempt at capturing the comics-based MMORPG market, currently occupied by Champions Online or City of Heroes/Villains.

While the game has been released for over a week on the PC and PlayStation 3, it's still very much a work in progress, as owners are complaining about a variety of problems and issues with the online title.

Still, DC Universe Online offers players the opportunity to become a hero or villain in the famous DC Comics universe, choosing to be guided by well-known characters like Superman, Batman or Wonder Woman, for heroes, or Lex Luthor, The Joker or Catwoman, for villains.

Your choices guide the path you'll take, either teaming up with like-minded individuals at the Justice League Watchtower, for good guys, or at the Legion of Doom headquarters, for bad ones.

You'll be able to access certain quest lines either in Metropolis or Gotham City, which you can change up if you get bored.

Most missions are player versus environment (PvE), including special instances that require teamwork, but you can also setup duels of players versus player (PvP).

You'll be able to rub spandex-clad elbows with heroes ranging from the aforementioned Superman or Batman to the Green Lantern, Aquaman, Hawkman or Supergirl, not to mention villains like The Joker, Lex Luthor, Brainiac, Catwoman, Killer Croc, Poinson Ivy or Two-Face.

Why it matters

If Sony Online Entertainment is able to get DC Universe Online up to par, then the title might become one of the most popular MMORPGs out there.

Even if it may not challenge Blizzard's World of Warcraft anytime soon, it's always nice to have a title that isn't based in the same fantasy setting and offers a lot of great experiences for comic book fans.

The company has a long way ahead of itself, however, as both the PC and PlayStation 3 versions have some serious issues, so it's going to be hard work trying to prove to potential owners that the game is actually playable.

DC Universe Online is out on the PC and PlayStation 3.
