A UK mother has delivered a rare set of identical triplets, and she is now allowed to take them home. The girls are born into a family that already has a three-year-old daughter.

Karen Gilbert, of Pontypool, describes that the newest additions to her family have now been taken out of the Intensive Care Unit. Ffion, Maddison and Paige were born on August 2, but they only weighed 11 pounds (5 kg) combined at the time.

The pregnancy was not an easy one for 32-year-old mom Karen, ABC News reported.

“Because they are identical, they all share the same placenta and the same fluid. They all grew and fought so quickly it was practically ripping Karen’s muscles apart,” dad Ian Gilbert describes.

Karen submitted herself to constant monitoring to prevent twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, when a blood transfer takes place between fetuses.
