Rescue teams have found the body of a teenager that drowned while trying to save her 6-year-old brother on Thursday.

The remains of 16-year-old girl Madison Leigh Wallace has been recovered from the freezing waters of the Big Sioux River in Sioux Falls.

KTIV writes that the Vermillion teen jumped in to grab her younger brother Garrett Martin Wallace, as he was swept away after rock climbing near the river.

Emergency crews were called in to save the Vermillion High School student on Thursday, but gave up hoping to find her alive by early Friday.

They are now looking for 28-year-old Lyle Francis Eagletail who accompanied the kids on their trip. Eagletail also tried swimming to get ahold of the young boy, and went missing in the process.

Meanwhile, Garrett Wallace has survived the fall in the icy river, having been pulled out. He is currently safe and sound and has not incurred major injuries, K Pop Starz reports.

Rescue efforts have been centered around the Pedestrian Bridge area by the local Falls Overlook Cafe, Sioux Falls Fire Chief Jim Sideras describes.

"That's where we're bordered in at and that's where we are confident that we'll find them.

"Everybody here has their eyes on water. Looking for something as small as a knee, patch of clothing.

"Our prayers are with them, we want to help them cope as best they can," Sideras explains.

Large patches of ice on the river and strong currents creating foam on the surface have made it difficult for divers to go in, at least until the ice is cleared.

"The problem is we had to break up a lot of this ice, and the ice is creating a lot of problems for us, so we had to bring in some special equipment to break up the ice," Sideras adds.
