Some thousands of owners will receive the final software

The project started by Motorola ten days ago is close to attaining its goal, to deliver the Ice Cream Sandwich operating system to all Motorola XOOM units. Although the project is confidential, a few details have just slipped, indicating that the company is testing the final software before making it available for general public.

The folks at AndroidPolice have just been tipped by a lucky Wi-Fi Motorola XOOM owner who was invited to participate at this soak test and provide feedback.

According to them, Motorola has started to push the Ice Cream Sandwich update to “a group of some thousands of XOOM Wi-Fi owners.” However, only a small fraction of these owners will be invited to provide feedback on the update in a special forum.

Until the soak test is complete, the small group of testers will not be able to post comments on the public forums, but they will get back this ability “in a day or so.”

Motorola also confirmed that it was testing the final version of the software, which should have usually taken two days, but the company has given itself some extra time, as the push of the update will continue over the weekend.

The good news is that Motorola plans to unleash Ice Cream Sandwich update to Wi-Fi Motorola XOOM units as soon as the soak test finishes, “unless there is some extremely serious issue.”

Basically, if nothing goes wrong, Wi-Fi Motorola XOOM will be among the first tablets to receive the Ice Cream Sandwich update this year. Asus has already announced that it has started to push the same update for its Transformer Prime slate.

In addition, Huawei made a surprising move as well and stated that its 7-inch MediaPad tablet will be delivered with Ice Cream Sandwich on board starting Q1 2012.
