Microsoft has just kicked up a notch the media experiences that are now possible on Nokia devices. The Redmond company delivered Silverlight for Symbian RTM yesterday, concomitantly offering developer tools and the first Beta Build of the Internet Information Services (IIS) Smooth Streaming Client for Symbian. By taking Silverlight to Symbian, the software giant is allowing in excess of 20 million users of Nokia S60 5th edition, such as Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia N97 and Nokia N97 Mini, to enjoy rich media experiences made possible by the IIS Smooth Streaming technology.

“The IIS Smooth Streaming Client for Symbian allows you to build rich IIS Smooth Streaming experiences for both on-demand and live IIS Smooth Streaming on Nokia S60 5th Edition Phones. This release of the IIS Smooth Streaming Client for Symbian allows you to build Silverlight players for on-demand and live Smooth Streaming, with full DVR, and other rich functionalities. This kit is intended to aid your development of rich Smooth Streaming players and experiences.

Since Smooth Streaming has already been available for a while now, some customers might already be familiar with the IIS Media Services extension. IIS Smooth Streaming is designed to make possible enhance media experiences via Silverlight over HTTP. On desktop computers, Smooth Streaming is even capable of delivering true HD 1080p media experiences without any problems.

The company added that “Silverlight for Symbian supports the following IIS Smooth Streaming features:

- HTTP protocol - On-demand streaming - Live streaming - Basic playback support (play, pause, resume, seek, stop) - Go to Live (DVR support) - Seek to stream position - Dynamic bit-rate switching (network condition adjustment) - SmoothStreamingMediaElement - Resolution changes while the stream is modified.”
