IFA 2008: World's First LED-Powered Full HD Projector Is Here

A projector's lamp is most likely its most delicate component, and the only one with a relatively limited functioning life (typically, several thousand hours). However, things might seriously change in the future, since the Delta Electronics company has just announced the development of the world's first LED-powered full HD DLP projector, capable of offering users a high-definition cinematographic experience for a much longer period of time.

As the manufacturer puts it, we're talking about the first full HD LED projector designed for the consumer market. The device offers users a wide range of advanced features, as for example 1080P resolution, plus wide color gamut, superior color, long operational life, lack of mercury and UV/IR. Actually, I'd stress out the operational life factor, since LEDs (and PhlatLight LEDs in particular) have an average functioning life of around 20,000 hours (compared to the 5-6000 hours for the most advanced lamps on the market).

"The LED illumination system replaces the lamp, the color wheel and the shutter of a traditional projector. What is crucial is the need for a precise and complex control algorithm that allows the LED to work with the DMD to get high image quality. We have achieved groundbreaking improvements recently that enable us to bring this product to market. This LED projector is not only a new product; it truly opens a new horizon for the projector industry," stated Jeff Fu, director for Projection Display at Delta’s Display Solutions Business Unit, when describing the company's latest achievements.

It's a little early to state that LED-powered projectors will completely replace lamp-based ones, but the process will most likely be similar to what happened to old, analog TVs, which are still being replaced by LCDs and plasma displays as we speak (a process that, without a doubt, will take several years to complete).
