Which will manage contact data

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has approved the new .tel domain, which will contain contact details of companies and individuals.

Telnic, the company that submitted the request, hopes it will be able to supply these domains by the end of next year.

"It's a place to look for contact information and will be a customer-managed system," said Khashayar Mahdavi, Telnic's CEO.

Users will decide what contact information to put in their .tel domain, and visitors can then click through to phone, Web, e-mail or instant messaging contacts.

Telnic's idea comes in addition to the .mobi domain, approved by ICANN earlier this month. The .mobi domain is intended for content designed for viewing on mobile phones as a way to boost the mobile content market.
