14 DAY TRIAL // IBase, a manufacturer that specialized in developing embedded computing solutions, has just started shipping the MI956 mini-ITX motherboard that is compatible with Intel's second-generation Core mobile processors using the G2 socket.
The motherboard made its appearance in Japanese stores just recently and is based on the Intel QM67 Express chipset.
According to IBase, its solution is compatible with all mobile Sandy Bridge processors that have a maximum TDP of 45W. This includes both Core, Pentium and Celeron series CPUs, and the only chip that isn't supported is the Core i7-2920XM Extreme Edition, which exceeds the 45W TDP.
Intel's processors can be paired together with as much as 8GB of DDR3 memory via two SODIMM slots that are placed right bellow the CPU socket, and the board also supports up to six SATA storage devices.
Two of these can operate at 6Gbps speeds, while the remaining four are limited at 3Gbps.
The rest of the expansion capabilities include a PCI Express x16 and a mini-PCIe x1 slot as well as LVDS, digital I/O and a pair of COM on-board headers.
Taking a look at the rear I/O panel, it becomes obvious that the MI956 is more than an entry-level solution as it features two USB 3.0 ports, DVI-D, DVI-I, and HDMI, video outputs, and dual Gigabit LAN connections.
These are both driven by Intel controllers and IBase has also included support for 7.1-channel audio as well as an on-board DisplayPort output.
Right now, the IBase MI956 mini-ITX motherboard has reached stores from Tokio's Akihabara district, where it is retailed for an impressive 39,800 yen (about $490 US).
Pricing aside, this is one of the few motherboards that are compatible with G2 socket Intel processors and could prove to be a nice companion for the mobile Sandy Bridge CPUs Intel started launching into retail just recently. (via Akiba PC Watch)
