One of the biggest issues toying with the popularity of electric vehicle is the so-called 'anxiety range,' manifested by most of the people who think about investing in a green car.

IBM plans to provide a cure, by introducing a new kind of lithium-ion battery, powerful enough to make the new generation of EVs come with 500 miles range between charges.

Innovative lithium-air cells, improved by experts, are expected to store a larger amount of energy.

A prototype is expected as soon as 2013. If tests were to prove its efficiency, the concept could become available for sale within the next eight years. 500 miles range is enough to please even the drivers who use their cars to travel long distances on a daily basis.

Such an accomplishment would most likely increase the number of EVs rolling on the city streets and green up transportation, by curbing the amount of emissions triggered by this sector.
