Judging by the way he once used to keep his fans up to speed with the goings-on in his personal life, especially after the much-mediated split from fellow singer Jessica Simpson, few could actually peg John Mayer for someone who’s afraid of dating. Yet, this is precisely what he told Ellen DeGeneres on her show the other day, as People magazine can confirm.

Mayer, always a fun and spontaneous person to have on any show, appeared on Ellen to talk gossip and his latest music album. Given the media interest in the women in his life, which peaked when he met and got together with Jennifer Aniston, Ellen inevitably asked him about his current stance on dating. He’s taking it slowly at this point, the singer said in response.

“Yeah, I’m a little freaked out about dating. So, I’m just going to let time pass and just do my thing,” the infamous “serial dater” tells Ellen, more or less on a serious note. As fans will know, the singer also dated, aside from the two gorgeous blondes mentioned above, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Minka Kelly. In this light, him joking about “ruining” Taylor Swift, with whom he recorded “Half of My Heart,” is not that out of line at it would seem at first sight, especially since he’s clearly joking.

Plans for the year to come include some time out of the spotlight, Mayer also said. “For some reason who ever I date has been famous for a while. I can’t sit here and be like, ‘Oh, please let me live my life in private with this famous person who’s been around for 15 years.’ The last thing you want is to see me doing is bashing my head going, ‘I’m shocked, that I’m being followed right now.’... I’m just going to hunker down. 2010 is a peaceful year for me no matter what I do,” the singer explained.

Below is the video with John Mayer on Ellen DeGeneres, which also includes Mayer’s hilarious explanation for choosing Taylor Swift over Ellen herself for a duet. Enjoy.
