14 DAY TRIAL // Marc Anthony is one of the most successful Latino singers of recent years, having sold over 12 million records worldwide and performed to millions of fans. He can make female fans swoon both with his voice and his presence, married two stunning women (and divorced them both), and is considered a “hunk.”
With all that, Marc Anthony is not conventionally handsome in any way and he’s the first to admit it. In fact, he tells the latest issue of Men’s Fitness, he’s anything but handsome, attributing his fame to being “ugly.”
Of course, we’re operating here with two abstract concepts that are relative. It’s likely that we can all agree on that Anthony is not handsome in a conventional way, but many of his fans would never describe him as “ugly.”
However, the point he’s trying to make is that he was never meant for greatness because of his looks. He doesn’t draw any parallels but, to better get what he’s saying, you could compare him to Ricky Martin or Enrique Iglesias, who would have enjoyed some success for their music efforts even assuming they were less gifted as performers.
Oppositely, Anthony was always “ugly” and skinny to boot. Speaking with Men’s Fitness, he recalls how his father, who was also skinny but was an amateur bodybuilder, tried to get him to bulk up and be tougher and, when he failed, how he tried to make him see that looks weren’t everything in life.
“My dad was confident, and I think it takes somebody like that to weigh 105 pounds [47.6 kg] and enter a [expletive]-ing bodybuilding contest. So what I never lacked was confidence. My dad would tell me, ‘Son, I’m ugly and you’re ugly – work on your personality’,” Marc tells the publication.
“I swear to God. I told him a couple of months ago, I said, ‘Dad, you remember telling me that when I was little?’ He’s like, ‘I’ll tell you that [stuff] today, too!’ I think it served me well. I think confidence is a powerful thing,” the singer and actor continues.
He’s being modest when he says it’s served him “well.” As noted above, Marc is a trendsetter in music and the biggest Latino artist on the scene. He’s an idol for millions of people from all corners of the world and yes, he does have ladies swooning at his feet.
He’s also rich and a successful businessman, and was married to a former Miss Universe and JLo from the Block herself, Jennifer Lopez. He may say he’s “famous because [he’s] ugly” but the truth is that Marc Anthony is famous because he’s a talented, versatile, and tireless artist. That and his confidence make him irresistible to the ladies.
