It seems that I-O Data has not yet finished its string of new product releases, as the announcements made over the past few days have now been followed by the launch of a new DVD writer.

DVD writers may not be overly easy to customize, at least as far as regular, internal ones, with the 5.25-inch from factor, are concerned.

Still, over the past couple of years, external and/or portable storage drives have actually gained traction, and this includes ODDs.

Granted, HDDs and SSDs with compact, 2.5-inch frames no doubt get most of the attention, but DVD burners aren't going by ignored either.

On that note, I-O Data just released the DVRP-U8C, a product that is this very kind of disk burning hardware.

It has a weight of 350 grams and measures 137 (W) x 154 (D) x 20 (H) mm, meaning that it shouldn't be too much trouble to carry around.

That said, universal compatibility with host PCs is assured by the USB 2.0 interface, while the customer appeal issue is covered by the multiple color options.

To be more specific, the newcomer is available in five incarnations, them being colored red, blue, brown, black and white.

As for the actual performance, the maximum speed at which a disk is written depends on the format.

CD-RW disks, for instance, go at 16x, while CD-R are written at 24x. Meanwhile, the scribing speeds of DVDs are 6x for DVD-RW andDVD-R/+R DL, 5x for DVD-RAM and 8x for DVD-R/+R, DVD+RW.

Interested end-users will have to wait until next month if they want to buy one of these (the I-O Data DVRP-U8C has a price of $77 and a one-year warranty).

Meanwhile, anyone that has the inclination can visit either the official announcement or the product page, or both, for any and all available details.
