Apple has a senseless representation of a radio for its music streaming service

I think we can all agree that even almighty Apple sometimes hits creativity roadblocks. Take the iTunes Radio icon, for instance.

Now, I’m not a design expert or anything like that, but I know something’s ugly when I see it.

I even appreciate things that are generally considered ugly, such as toads and those spiky lizards in Australia.

At least the aforementioned animals have a mathematical beauty to them, if you will.

There’s a solid reason behind every element of their design (the bubbly eyes, the patterns on their skins, etc).

At the other end of the spectrum lies the iTunes Radio icon. Which is both ugly and senseless, in my opinion.

Apple couldn’t have possibly created a less attractive representation of a radio than this.

Even a skeuomorphic radio would make more sense, considering everything Apple has been going through with its radical redesign of iOS 7.

The coloring is unnecessarily flashy (I can’t even decide if it’s red, pink, or orange).

It wants to be a flat piece of graphics but it has holes, which suggest depth.

The holes are used both for the speaker grill (where they theoretically make sense) as well as for the buttons, which technically makes it a busted radio with its buttons fallen out.

I can see through the thing. The background of the iTunes window springs through the holes, making it look like a fly swatter.

Even the antenna doesn’t seem to go well with the rest of the drawing. It should be pointing upwards more.

Any design experts around here willing to clue me in?
