The phenomenon might have been caused by water infiltrating under the highway

Authorities have closed up a sinkhole opened in California early on Friday, August 23. The depression was formed as crews were paving the roadway on Interstate 80.

KCRA describes it as just 3 feet (91 cm) wide. It has reportedly opened up near Truckee, California, and it has stopped traffic in the area for a few hours.

The incident took place near Donner Pass Road and authorities are yet to identify the cause for the formation of the hole.

Caltrans spokeswoman Rochelle Jenkins tells Reno Gazette-Journal about water infiltrating the ground under the highway possibly prompting the depression.

“Water invasively tries to find its way through things and doesn’t always make it through culverts, as much as we try,” she says.

Crews were working on paving the center median around Donner Pass Road when the ground collapsed.

Traffic resumed at around 2:45 p.m., according to a statement by Caltrans. Lanes are now open in both directions.
