News from Scotland says that, throughout these past few days, hundreds of puffins have shown up dead on the country's east coast.

Apparently, both officials and wildlife researchers were alerted by members of the public, who called in and reported the fact that countless such birds were spread across beaches from Aberdeen and Angus all the way to Northumberland.

For the time being, a proper explanation concerning what caused these animals to die is yet to be provided. However, it is being said that the puffins most likely died because of starvation, the Scotland Daily Record says.

As wildlife researchers explain, it is very possible that the severe weather now manifesting itself in the North Sea made it impossible for the birds to eat as much and as often as they needed.
