Rumor was wrong

It seems the rumor indicating that the Hulu service coming to the PlayStation 3 would require a subscription to the PlayStation Plus premium service was unfounded. Some outlets speculated that those interested in getting Hulu Plus on the Sony made home console would have to pay 50 dollars per year for the new premium online service from the console maker before giving up an additional 10 dollars for one month in order to enjoy television content from the backers of Hulu.

A statement from Hulu reads, “With the launch of Hulu Plus there have been many rumors started and we are trying our best to remedy the situation.” The company then goes to address the main rumor by clarifying that “the Playstation Plus service is only a requirement during the preview period.”

The company is also saying that “Once the preview period ends you should be able to download the Hulu Plus app but that will still require the Hulu Plus subscription. Right now we are limiting the number of users but Hulu Plus will be launching to the public very soon so stay tuned.”

Hulu Plus is designed to allow users of the PlayStation 3 to access more content than the free browser-based version already available. Full runs of classic and current television series will be offered to subscribers and the quality of the video content will also be better, with resolutions being up to 720p, which is significantly more than the 480p that can be seen in a browser.

Hulu Plus is slated to come to the PlayStation 3 during this month and those who use an Xbox 360 as a gaming console can also get access to it in early 2011. The service can also be employed on the iPhone and the iPad. Home consoles are using the new television content as proof that despite being primarily gaming oriented they can offer entertainment for the whole family as well.
