Hugh Jackman first appeared as Logan / Wolverine in an X-Men movie in 2000, and he will end this run in 2017, when the sequel to “The Wolverine” comes out. Fans guessed this much from his recent Instagram post on the topic, but he’s now confirming it.

So it’s official: after 2017, Hugh Jackman will no longer be Wolverine. The confirmation comes from the latest episode of Dr. Oz, where the handsome Aussie was invited as guest. You can see video of the segment below.

Asked what led him to this decision, Hugh says, “It just felt like it was the right time to do it. And let’s be honest, 17 years… I never thought in a million years it would last, so I’m so grateful to the fans for the opportunity of playing it.”

Translation: he’s getting old for the part, not in the sense that he doesn’t look like Wolverine, but rather that his body is having trouble keeping up with the grueling workout sessions necessary to get into Wolverine shape.

In fact, this is something that Jackman has talked about before, the need to push himself to the maximum to get in top shape for the role. At the time, he didn’t mind it, but as of late, he admitted that it wasn’t getting any easier, because obviously, he wasn’t getting any younger.

Are you sad to hear that he’s out of Fox’s superhero franchise? Who could possibly replace him, assuming the studio will want to reboot the character instead of just retiring it?
