Chinese mobile phone maker Huawei is reportedly gearing up for the launch of a smartphone that would pack a 2K screen, though it appears that it might not be able to make it official before September this year.

According to a recent article on Huawei News, a source from the Chinese social network Weibo has confirmed that the upcoming device will be included in the popular, high-end Huawei Ascend D series, and that it will arrive on shelves with a 5-inch display.

Moreover, the mobile phone is said to be powered by a 2GHz true octa-core HiSilicon K3V3 processor, which will be launched only in late Q3 this year. Thus, the handset might become official only towards the end of the year as well.

Huawei is reportedly planning on launching the 2K smartphone with a price tag of around $633 (€460) attached to it, though it remains to be seen whether this will indeed pan out.

Apparently, this will be only one of the Ascend D devices that Huawei is planning for this year, as an Ascend D3 is also expected to land on shelves in the not too distant future.

The phone has been rumored a few times before, and most of its hardware specifications are almost confirmed, including a 1080P 441ppi IPS LCD screen and a 1.8GHz octa-core HiSilicon Kirin 920 processor (with 1.8GHz and 1.5GHz quad-core CPUs), which is based on the ARM big.LITTLE technology.

Moreover, the mobile phone is said to sport 2GB of RAM, which should make it a powerful handset. It is also expected to feature a metal back plate, IP54 certification for dust and water resistance, and a 13-megapixel camera on the back.

Huawei has always included top-of-the-line smartphones in its Ascend D family of devices, and it will certainly not come as a surprise if Ascend D3 indeed proves to come with the hardware specs mentioned above.

Rumor has it that the Ascend D3 will become available for purchase sometime June in China and that it will be priced at around $469 (€341). It is also expected to offer support for 4G networks in the country.

In addition to the new Ascend D devices, Huawei is also expected to launch a new Ascend P phone in the coming months, in the form of Huawei Ascend P7.

The smartphone has been leaked online a few times before, and it was even expected to arrive at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week, but the handset vendor chose to announce the Ascend G6 there instead.
