Huawei Technologies announced that it recently deployed a High Speed Download Packet Access (HSDPA) network in the state of Kedah to support the 11th Sukan Malaysia National Sports Event (SUKMA). The HSDPA network enabled Celcom Malaysia's 100,000 UMTS subscribers to watch a 'live' broadcast of the many sporting events that took place across 13 sport stadiums via their 3G mobile phones. According to the expansion contract, Huawei will provide more than 1000 WCDMA New Generation Node Bs to Celcom.

Huawei implemented and deployed the HSPDA network within a short duration of 7 days, one of the fastest turnaround times for a project of this nature, to meet the launch of the SUKMA event. The network covered 13 stadiums in the major cities of Kedah State, including Langkawi Island, one of Malaysia's major tourist resort islands. Despite the project's significant challenges, Huawei worked closely with Celcom to ensure the successful deployment and implementation of the HSDPA network during the entirety of the SUKMA event.

This project is an extension of Huawei's ongoing cooperation with Celcom and its parent company, TM. Huawei won TM's 3G network contract in the fourth quarter of 2004 and is the major vendor in the deployment of TM's 3G network. At present, Huawei's WCDMA New Generation Node B covers major cities in Malaysia including Johor, Melaka, Penang and Kedah.
