Google Now has more info than you probably expect it to have

Google Now is the next-generation search app. Former CEO Eric Schmidt talked for years about how the future search engine would predict what you need instead of having to ask it.

It would be aware of your surroundings, your likes, and what you need at one point, and give you relevant information.

This looked a bit Sci-Fi only a few years ago, but Google Now is making it a reality. Granted, there's still a long way to go, but the service is already proving quite useful for things like weather reports, traffic data, and more, delivered exactly when you need them.

However, not everything about Now is automatic. After all, it's still a search app and you can still ask it for information. But here too Now does more than a standard app.

Google is highlighting one of Now's features that most people may not be aware of, namely the ability to browse for local events. You might not use the Google search site for a query something like "what's happening nearby," yet that's exactly the type of thing you should be asking the Google Now app.

"Looking for something to do in your area? Just check Google Now on your Android or iOS device to check out for local events. Scroll until you see a card for 'Nearby Events' to check out what's going on," Google explained.

"For example, if you're in the Bay Area for Independence Day, you'd learn that you could see San Francisco's fireworks from the SS Jeremiah O'Brien tonight. When you click on any of the events, you'll also see search results that include a map and more details, like the time and address," it added.

This feature is one of many in Google Now, but it alone could replace several other apps, if it gets good enough that the suggestions are actually useful.
