The private spacecraft is heading towards the International Space Station

The spacecraft Cygnus is well on its way to the ISS by now. Having successfully launched, it's now expected to reach the ISS and dock by Sunday. In the meantime though, its chase of the International Space Station will make for a great spectacle in the sky.

Cygnus, only the second spacecraft built by a private company to ever attempt to dock with the ISS, is now very close behind the ISS, so all you need to do to spot it is wait for the ISS to show up and then wait a few more minutes for Cygnus to follow on its trail.

Cygnus will be significantly dimmer than the ISS, which is one of the brightest objects in the night sky, but having the ISS come before it should make it easier to spot since you'll know where to look. The ISS is visible to the naked eye for a few minutes in the early hours of the morning and early evening, when sunlight reflects from it onto the Earth below.

You can use NASA's Spot the Station tool to set up reminders of when the ISS is visible around your area or visit Heavens Above or N2YO.com for more detailed or real-time tracking.
