My Opera is shutting down, but your blog can live on

Opera has announced that its My Opera blogging platform will be shutting down next year. If you're still updating your My Opera blog, or just want to preserve your memories, you'll want to get your data out of there before the shutdown and, presumably, move it to a new home online.

My Opera enables you to export all your posts, comments, and photos in a standard format, so you have plenty of choices.

A solid one is WordPress.com, the largest blogging website on the planet. There's no automated process set up, at least not for now, like has been the case with other blogging platforms that were shut down. Thankfully, the manual process is not that complicated.

First, you'll have to export your My Opera data. Log into the My Opera website and go to your Account settings, from the wrench menu. Next, click on Blog Settings and you'll notice the big blue "Export your blog" button. You'll get an email with the link to the export file as soon as it's ready.

You'll need to import this file into a new WordPress.com blog. If you don't have one, you'll first need to sign up for WordPress.com. Once that's taken care of, you can visit to the WordPress Dashboard.

Here, under Tools, you'll find the Import section. Select "My Opera" from the import options and then click on Choose File to select the file you got from My Opera. Upload that to WordPress.com and you should be ready to go.

When other platforms were shut down, WordPress.com was quick to come to the rescue, sometimes even setting up an automated process so that moving blog hosts only took a couple of clicks. That may still happen with My Opera but, if you'd rather not wait, the manual method should be fairly painless.
