Apple is making it easy for customers to choose a Bumper or third party case for their new iPhone and have the company ship one to their door, free of charge. Owners of a new generation iPhone 4 handset need to download a free application from the iTunes App Store and confirm with Apple that they own the troubled device. After signing in with their Apple ID, customers can select their case and order one from Apple.

“If you purchase an iPhone 4 before September 30, 2010, you are eligible to receive an iPhone 4 Bumper or a select third-party case from Apple at no charge,” the company states on its web site. “Follow these steps to apply for a Bumper or case,” Apple adds, and proceeds to outline the steps in question (available below)

1. Download the iPhone 4 Case Program app from the App Store. 2. Launch the app on your iPhone 4 and sign in using your iTunes Store account or Apple ID. 3. Select your Bumper or case.

Apple’s iPhone Case Program app is available to iPhone 4 owners only. The software is required because Apple needs to check the IMEI and serial number to verify that everyone who requests a free Bumper is entitled to one. Also, all iPhone 4 purchases must be made by September 30, 2010, to qualify for the program. For iPhone 4 purchases made before July 23, customers must apply no later than August 22, 2010; otherwise they must apply within 30 days of their iPhone 4 purchase, Apple said.

Available in English, Chinese, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean , Norwegian, Spanish and Swedish, the iPhone 4 Case Program application is available as a free download using the link below.

Those who purchased a Bumper before Apple introduced the iPhone 4 Case Program are eligible for a full refund ($30). Learn more here.
