There are thousands of fonts out there and many look very similar, which could mean you may have trouble identifying them, unless you get some help.

With this purpose in mind, WhatFontis.com was born.

The website offers you a way to find out the name of a certain font by simply loading a picture with several letters. That done, you must simply identify a few letters to aid the system, and wait a fraction of a second before finding out the exact name of the font.

While the site might recognize the fonts on backgrounds with mixed colors, it is preferable to choose an image that has a solid color base for more accurate results.

“There are times when the system returns wrong results and we try to correct this. We want to improve the results and collect more fonts. There are some providers that don’t want their fonts to be on our website and we try to negotiate this,” Alexandru Cuibari of WhatFontis says in a brief interview for Softpedia.

While the idea isn’t exactly original, as even the site’s founder admits, similar tools available online lacked these exact features they offer.

In only a few years, the website has managed to index nearly 280,000 different fonts, and more are being added constantly.

A recently added feature streamlines the process of preparing source image files for processing and font recognition: instead of cutting images up using software installed locally, users can simply upload files and crop them using an online image editor.

[Editor's Note:] I wanted to try out and see how the system works and I chose one of my personal favorite fonts whenever I delve into image editing, Vivaldi. The site provided me with the character-identification page and, after filling out some of the letters, the system was quick to point me in the right direction and correctly identified the font.
