A smart preview is about 5% of the original file size

With the launch of Lightroom 5, Adobe introduced lots of new features that give photographers even more control over the creative process as well as new ways to enhance their photos.

With today's ultra-light laptops and solid state drives, photographers can edit photos even when on the road, right after a photoshoot. This is a great thing to do, but due to limited storage space you can hold only a limited number of RAW files on your computer.

One of the new options added with Lightroom 5 is the ability to create Smart Previews, a feature that allows you to create high-quality, reduced size stand-ins of your original photos without having to store the original RAW files.

Moreover, a smart preview is usually only 5% of the original file size. With Smart Previews you can make all the modifications you want to your images, and upon connecting to the device that holds the original files, Lightroom will automatically sync and apply all adjustments made and added metadata in a non-destructive way.
