SmartMovie, developed by Lonely Cat Games, is a collection of two software programs that allows Symbian-based devices to run movies at a high quality. The two applications have to be installed on different platforms: PC Converter, which allows you to convert video clips from your desktop PC to a format playable on a mobile device, and Mobile Player, which allows you to play back the converted video on your mobile device. SmartMovie is one of the most useful applications for those who own multimedia Symbian devices such as: Nokia N96, Nokia N95 8GB or the latest Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

Both applications are needed in order to be able to convert a movie to a mobile phone format, so install PC Converter on any Windows Vista / XP / 2000 / ME / 98 desktop computer, and Mobile Player on your Symbian phone (check requirements before). After installing both apps, open PC Converter and choose the video file that you intend to convert. Depending on the video format, the file is recognized or not. If video format is recognized, the file is opened, and you may start to preview it and convert it. Anyway, there's a workaround even if your file isn't recognized, which will imply the install of special codecs on your PC.

Set up conversion parameters or simply choose your device model in the list and settings will be predefined to optimal. If you cannot find your device in the list, simply choose a similar device type with same screen resolution. Click the Convert button to start conversion. The conversion will be run, and the progress indicator will tell you how far it is. After it is done you can transfer the file to your microSD card or on your phone's memory through a USB cable, if you have enough storage space.

The SmartMovie player installed on your mobile phone can also display video subtitles while playing video clips. The subtitles are stored in text format. In case you use SmartMovie Converter to convert video files, it is recommended that you also load subtitles into the Converter, and let it pack the subtitle text file into the final video file. This way the subtitles will be transferred to the device directly with the video file. If you found the subtitle after converting the video file, you can still use it but only if it's in SUB format. SmartMovie player will find the subtitle text file if it has the same file name as the AVI one, but with .sub extension instead of .avi. You'll have to upload both the AVI and the SUB file into the mobile device in order to see the subtitles.

SmartMovie is the simplest solution for transferring your favorite movies from PC to your Symbian smartphone. The application can be acquired for 24.50 EUR, but it is also offered as trial for 14 days.
