One of the few free solutions that allows Android users to backup their devices without plugging it to a computer is called Dropbox. This is an online file storage service that provides users with the option to save all their data on the company's servers which act as a virtual drive.

To start backing up your data make sure you download and install DropSpace app on your Android device. The application is currently available as a free download from Android Market.

However, the application has some limitations, as it only allows users to backup files found on the SD card. Synchronization can be done manually or it can be run as a service that will automatically start at certain time intervals.

After installing the application on your Android smartphone, you will need to create a Dropbox account. Then open the Android DropSpace app and log in with the Dropbox account that you have just created.

The next steps are easy to follow and will help you synch all data found on the SD card or specific file/directories.

Start from the main menu and tap on the Add directories/files to sync list and tap the folders you want to back up to Dropbox.

Create a new folder in Dropbox and then simply select the folder that you want to be synced.

As mentioned above, you can also set regular backups by checking the box next to Run as service from the Main menu. The application even allows you to select how often you wish to backup your device from 1 to 168 hours.

Make sure to check Sync back files if the Dropbox server has new files that you want to be transferred on your phone.

Also, you can check the Sync only Wi-Fi option to make sure that your phone will only sync when it's connected to Wi-Fi hotspot.
