14 DAY TRIAL // Not long after a Chinese labor rights group reported violations by Apple screen supplier Biel Crystal, some disturbing images emerged, showing various injuries reportedly incurred by workers at Biel plants.
Hong Kong-based Biel Crystal reportedly makes around 60 percent of the screens used by Apple in various products. It isn’t clear what these products are, but they can be anything from iPads to MacBooks.
Biel Crystal's website states that the company employs roughly 60,000 workers across a total of 15 production lines. It claims to provide “the best services with the most competitive price to our customers.”
But students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM) say otherwise. Following an extensive investigation into the work conditions at Biel, the labor rights group has published an extensive report detailing various violations committed by the Apple supplier based in Hong Kong.
SACOM claims there have been numerous work-related injuries at Biel factories, with five workers actually committing suicide over the past two years, because of the harsh conditions.
The report includes upsetting images of alleged injuries incurred by the workers, which seem to concur the suicide reports.
SACOM states on its web site, “No more bloodstained cover glass on iPhones! Biel Crystal, Stop bloody exploitation now!”
It also notes that the group “conducted an investigative research towards the labour condition in Hong Kong-owned Apple supplier – Biel Crystal’s Huizhou factory and discovered numerous labour abuses and violation of Chinese Labour Law.”
“SACOM decided to publish the investigation result and file complaint officially to the Electronic Industry Citizenship Coalition (EICC),” it states.
