Improved security for Google's mail product

Gmail is often regarded as the most efficient mail solution against spam messages because it contains powerful filters able to block unwanted mails. Although it is quite popular for its antispam abilities, the company plans to improve its filters and attract even more users. Today, "The Securities and Exchange Commission this morning suspended trading in the securities of 35 companies that have been the subject of recent and repeated spam email campaigns," as it is mentioned in a press release. This action is not useful only for Google because it helps many other web based e-mail providers block unwanted messages.

The Gmail anti-spam team is really thankful as the mail's spam filters are now improved by a non-Google tool that blocks some of the largest spammers on the Internet.

"We know how much Gmail users love their clean inboxes. Every day we look for the relatively few messages that slip through our filter and work to deploy solutions quickly to catch them the next time. It's hard work, but we're proud that even though more spam is being sent these days, less of it is getting into Gmail inboxes. But even if Gmail can catch a lot of it, spammers will continue to send the spams in the hopes that someone else's filter will fail to catch them. It's so nice to see a root cause be addressed, as the SEC has done today, which will make the world a better place for both Gmail and non-Gmail users alike. Bravo!" Brad Taylor, Gmail anti-spam engineer, sustained on the official blog of the company.

As you know, Gmail is probably the most powerful rival for Yahoo Mail, a web-based mail provider that is often criticized for its weak antispam filters. Although the giant portal works hardly to increase the power of the spam blockers, most of the spam sent to millions of inboxes is based on Yahoo accounts available for free for all the users. I hope that SEC's action to block 35 spam companies will really help Yahoo improve the filter not only if you are a giant portal user but also if you're attacked by millions of unwanted messages sent from Yahoo's accounts.
